Compromise of Sulla's First Civil War
The End of the War
The end of Sulla's first civil war was brought by fighting. Fighting broke out when Gnaeus Octavius, the consul of 87, led the conservative supporters of Sulla against the popularis supporters of Cinna. Later, when Marius returned from exile with his son, he had an army that he had raised. By the end of 87 BC Gaius Marius combined with Cinna, and Quintus Sertorius, the Roman war hero, to enter Rome and take control of the city. Gaius Marius's soldiers went through Rome killing the supporters of Sulla, including Octavius. Gaius then declared Sulla's laws and reforms invalid, and exiled him. He then had himself and Cinna elected consuls for 86 BC, but Gaius Marius died soon after and left Cinna in control of Rome. Sulla's second civil war would soon begin in 83 BC.
